Mona Stangley  - Owner and operator of The Chicken Ranch.  A business woman who also plays house mother to the girls.  She is a woman who once had dreams of her own that were never fulfilled; While she may have been scared of the unknown earlier in her life, she has the confidence to be her own woman now.  She has an attraction to the sheriff that goes deeper than the “business” encounters they have had. She is a survivor.

Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd – A good-ol boy who is blind to the power of the media.  Gruff with a soft spot for Miss Mona, he struggles with the ability to accept and return to her any affection beyond that of a friendship.  Ed Earl tends to shoot off his mouth and gun before thinking, often landing him in the hot seat.

Melvin P. Thorpe – Preacher type with show business instincts masquerading as a newsman.  Boisterous and loud, he has the ability to motivate his followers.  Believes that his actions are in the people’s best interest – though his motivations are self-serving.

Mayor Rufus Poindexter/Chorus Ensemble – Local car salesman and mayor of the town. Likely never imagined he’d really have to make any decision or deal with a high profile issue.

Senator Wingwoah/Chorus Ensemble – President of the Aggies alumni association; Most likely a former football player himself.  Family man who is a servant of the people and patron of the whorehouse.

C.J. Scruggs/Governor of Texas

C.J.   Local insurance agent and president of the local Jaycees; Sidekick to the Mayor, CJ is the type to interject his thoughts on how the town should be run. 

Governor – A typical politician who will “side step” the issue and deliver a resolution to keep the voters happy.

Angel - A hardened city whore on the outside, Angel also has a young son that exposes her maternal nature.  She hopes that the whorehouse will help get her back on track to getting a real job and moving on from her days of tricking.

Shy - An inexperienced, gawky farmgirl who arrives at the whorehouse after running away from home, Shy is sweet and inexperienced.  She is eager to learn and appreciative to have found a new family; her whole life is still before her.

Jewel – Housekeeper at the whorehouse; Miss Mona’s confidant – she is sassy and respectful.

Doasty Mae/Chorus Ensemble - a wise-cracking waitress at the Texas Twinkle Café.  She has no faith in the local businessmen or sheriff to handle the issues at hand.  While she is seen as somewhat boring compared to Mona, she does have a sexy side that nobody sees.

Edsel Mackey/Chorus Ensemble – Country editor of the town newspaper; educated with a liberal streak – he conforms to the local way of thinking as not to rock the boat too much.

Chorus Ensemble – A variety of roles from back-up singers, townspeople, whorehouse patrons, cheerleaders, reporters. The chorus also are featured as:

The Girls of The Chicken Ranch – Almost sorority in nature, the girls have a bond with each other and know what it takes to keep a customer happy.

Aggie Football Players – Typical high-testosterone jocks who can cut a mean dance on their way to their Thanksgiving Game prize – Hee-haw!

 

Various ages 20+

Band Leader – the narrator of the show; this role will be performed by the band’s conductor and is cast.
